Bawean Island, a Small Hidden Paradise in East Java

Bawean is an island located in the Java Sea, approximately 120 kilometers north of Gresik. Administratively, the island is included in Gresik, East Java Province. Dutch (VOC) goes first to this island in the year 1743. Before 1974, Bawean was included in the district of Surabaya, but since 1974 the island of Bawean entered to Gresik’s territory because it is located closer to Gresik.


Bawean has 2 subdistricts called Sangkapura and Tambak. The population is around 70,000 which is a blend of several terms that come from the island of Java, Madura, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Sumatra, including culture and language. Bawean most residents have a livelihood as fishermen or farmers as well as a migrant worker in Malaysia and Singapore, most of them already have permanent resident status in the country, in addition to the population in both countries Bawean also settled in Australia and Vietnam. Majority of the population is ethnic Bawean Tribe and other tribes for example Javanese, Madurese, Bugis, Mandar, Mandailaing, Banjar and Palembang.



Bawean is derived from Sanskrit, meaning there is a sunlight. According to legend, around 1350, a group of sailors from the Majapahit Kingdom caught in a storm in the Java Sea and ended up stranded on the island of Bawean at sunrise. In the book Negarakertagama mention that the island is named Buwun while in serat Praniti Wakya Jaya Baya Bawean population began in the previous 8 Saka where the island is uninhabited. the Government of the Netherlands and the European colonies in the 18th century named the island as Lubeck, Baviaan, Bovian, Lobok. Bawean is the language of Bawean Island, instead of Madurese language such as that promulgated before this. In Malaysia and Singapore, the mention of this tribe turned into Boyan. They call themselves the Boyan, meaning the Bawean.



Currently, Bawean is a favorite tourist destination in East Java, especially small island beach resort and around the island of Bawean, called Gili Noko and Gili Selayar that provice long white sand beach, so dubbed one of the hidden paradise in East Java.
