Bawean is an island
located in the Java Sea, approximately 120 kilometers north of Gresik.
Administratively, the island is included in Gresik, East Java Province. Dutch
(VOC) goes first to this island in the year 1743. Before 1974, Bawean was included
in the district of Surabaya, but since 1974 the island of Bawean entered to Gresik’s
territory because it is located closer to Gresik.
Bawean is derived from
Sanskrit, meaning there is a sunlight. According to legend, around 1350, a
group of sailors from the Majapahit Kingdom caught in a storm in the Java Sea
and ended up stranded on the island of Bawean at sunrise. In the book
Negarakertagama mention that the island is named Buwun while in serat Praniti
Wakya Jaya Baya Bawean population began in the previous 8 Saka where the island
is uninhabited. the Government of the Netherlands and the European colonies in
the 18th century named the island as Lubeck, Baviaan, Bovian, Lobok. Bawean is the
language of Bawean Island, instead of Madurese language such as that
promulgated before this. In Malaysia and Singapore, the mention of this tribe
turned into Boyan. They call themselves the Boyan, meaning the Bawean.
Currently, Bawean is a
